The Mental Health Program Area was established in 1998. As mental health continues to be an important issue of concern for both the GP and the wider community, the Divisions’ Board have continued to support the mental health program.
GPds is funded by the Commonwealth's Department of Health and Ageing to manage and deliver a range of mental health services.
The programs GPds manages under its mental health program are:
• More Allied Heath Services (MAHS)
• Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) provided under the Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care (BOiMHC).
• Mental Health Services in Rural and Remote Areas Program
• Access to Aged Care Initiative
In the Mental Health Program we:
• Provide education
• Work with local Mental Health Services to develop strategies and processes to support GPs and the health services to work collaboratively to provide integrated care for patients experiencing mental illness
•Deliver counselling and mental health services by way of contracted Allied Mental Health Professionals
• Update the Health Services Directory with mental health providers
• Disseminate useful mental health resources
