Towards the end of last year, the Down South Aboriginal Health teams in Collie and Manjimup hosted Community BBQs to bring clients and families together to celebrate getting through 2021. It isn’t often that we stop to celebrate the wins and acknowledge how much we accomplish each year. As well as catching up socially.
The BBQs enabled us to provide information regarding the COVID vaccine and to offer support to our clients that wanted to get their vaccination by providing transport to and from their appointments and assisting to book the appointments.
24 people attended the BBQs. Nearly 94% were fully vaccinated. The one client that was not vaccinated opted to yarn with the other clients about the vaccine, any side effects that they had experienced and then chose to take the info/fact sheets that were displayed so that they could go home and read them at their leisure.
The Community BBQs offered a social setting to dispel fears and talk about the vaccination and why it is needed in the community. Both Collie and Manjimup teams did an amazing job to bring the community together demonstrating that we are more than a health service. It’s about putting people first. These teams embody our mission of making local health needs our business.
