Reaching out to the isolated

3/6/2020

Nidjalla Waangan Mia staff have been preparing and delivering fresh, home-made meals to at risk and vulnerable clients for the past 6 weeks.  During this time over 283 meals have been prepared and delivered to people in need.  They are cooked, packed and delivered on the same day – twice a week. The meals are all healthy, nutritionally balanced with lots of vegetables.

These are clients of the service who are house-bound because of chronic conditions or have a suppressed immune system due to cancer treatment.  They can’t see their families for the same reasons and are often isolated and lonely.

Observing strict physical distancing and hygiene protocols, staff drop the food at the door without making contact.  Sometimes, there is a quick yarn at the front door to check in with the client and make sure they have everything they need.  If they are low on medications, a telehealth appointment is made and the prescription can also be delivered.

Feedback from clients has been overwhelmingly positive.  They feel like they have not been forgotten and the meals have been prepared with their health needs in mind – like soft food for easy chewing.  Even a short yarn at the door step makes a huge difference in their lives, with so many changes happening quickly and in short period of time resulting in anxiety and fear.

The team also give clients resources like laminated brochures to put at the front door for those who cannot have visitors & information on thorough hand washing protocols.  It is an easier way to communicate their needs than having to tell family and friends not to pop over.

This has helped many to understand what is happening and to reduce the anxiety within the community.

NWM is still open and clients have the option of face to face or telehealth services depending on their preference.  The service has adjusted operations to ensure that numbers in the centre are strictly observed and there is a frequent cleaning regime to ensure everyone’s health and safety is secure.
